Migraine headaches are painful headaches that can last anywhere between seven and seventy-two hours. Unfortunately there are a number of different ways to cause a migraine headache, however, there are now a range of migraine headache treatments available that can reduce, if not eliminate the pain; you simply need to find one that works for you.

There are several types of treatments, but the best types you can use are the migraine specific abortive medication. This type of medication works by narrowing the temporal arteries. The dilution of the temporal arteries is always the cause of migraine headaches (though this can be triggered in a number of different ways). Another type of relief comes from medications that both narrows the temporal arteries and relieves pain. This is generally used to both abort migraine headaches and tension headaches.

There are two main types of migraine headache specific abortive medications. They are triptans and ergots.

Triptans:
Triptans are, of course, for migraine headaches. They narrow the arteries to constrict the blood flow by attaching to the attaching to the serotonin receptors located on both the blood vessels and nerves. This then reduces the blood vessels as well as any inflammation.

Ergots:
Ergots are also migraine headache abortive medication. They pretty much work the same way as triptans. The problem is that they cause more of a constriction, and it occurs in the heart as well, which causes problems for some patients. One should remember that the effects from Ergots on ones heart tends to be more prolonged than Tritons.

Midrin:
Midrin is a type of migraine headache abortive that also uses a pain reliever. This is the type that is usually used by people who tend to get tension headaches because it helps with the pain that starts in the neck. It works much in the same way as the other two, but is more effective if used during the migraine headache. It includes both the pain reliever and a mild sedative to help the medicine work with its full effectiveness.

When trying to decide on anything that may influence your blood pressure, you should talk to your doctor. They know how much your body can safely handle, so always be careful on what migraine headache treatment you decide to try!

There are a number of things that you can do for a migraine headache beyond the remedy of the all available over counter medications. What is even better is that for pretty much all of these home remedies for migraine headaches, you are not even required to have any kind of professional to help, just a friend or someone you know that can help with a couple of things.

Ice:
Putting an icepack over your head and eyes can help. If you don’t have one of the wrap around packs that can be bought at several stores, you can still achieve the effect, maybe even improve it, with a washcloth. First you should get a clean washcloth and soak it in cool water. Don’t ring it out, but give it a little squeeze to get rid of the extra dripping water. Next, you fold it so that it can easily fit in the freezer. After it has began to freeze, pull it out and move the frozen parts towards the inside while moving the wet parts towards the outside. As soon as your washcloth is frozen solid, you are able to pull it out and wrap it around your head and eyes. Having it wrapped aroung your eyes help to reduce eyestrain. Eyestrain can easily increase your migraine headache’s intensity.

Massages:
This is not the type of massage that you go to a professional for. For this you need someone that you know. Since migraine headaches often cause photophobia, or sensitivity to light, it is a good idea to go into a dark room to lie down. While your there have a friend or somebody that you know massage your scalp. Doing this for ten minutes or longer can significantly reduce, if not get rid of your migraine headaches. You may even want to have the washcloth icepack on your eyes and head to help increase the effects.

Food:
When you feel a migraine headache coming on it isn’t a bad idea to eat something with a lot of salt in it, avoid chocolate though. A small bag of Fritos or other salty food may help to calm the attack, if you catch it early enough, and this calming effect even has the potential to stop your migraine headache completely.

When using home remedies for migraine headaches you must remember that not all migraine headaches are treatable this way, and you might have to take some medicine as well to make them go away.

Pain from Migraine headaches can be excruciating, and can last for hours. Actually, they can last anywhere between seven and seventy-two hours. Can you imagine suffering from such horrible pain for so long? How you would love migraine headache relief!

When you get a headache, all you want to do is find a something that will make it go away fast. But maybe you aren’t to keen on using medication. Perhaps you want a more natural way.

If this is your case, maybe you should think about something like therapy. Different therapies can be used including chiropractic, chinese acupuncture, and even biofeedback. Doctors have decided that these work well for migraine headache relief and often recommend undergoing one or more as part of a preventative and relief treatment.

Chiropractic:
I bet you have at least heard of this before, even if you have never undergone it yourself. It happens to be ‘the’ therapy with known results. Most famous among the alternative therapies. The chiropractic therapy can be used for treatment of things such as a post traumatic, a tension type, and even give migraine headache relief at times. There is a theory about headaches. It is that the headaches that people suffer from may actually be caused by abnormal motion as well as irritation in your neck muscles, and nerves as well as other tissues. Chiropractic therapy helps to relieve your pain by using help from manipulation, and exercise, as well as other physical therapytypes.

Acupuncture:
Did you know that there are special points all over your body that are used for acupuncture? Acupuncture is a traditional form of Chinese therapy. The Chinese would take small needles designed for this and place them I the various acupuncture points to help increase the healing process. It is often a good way to treat migraine headaches because of the endorphins that are stimulated. Endorphins are your body’s natural pain reliever, which is so beneficial to have them release when you are suffering from a bad migraine headache.

Biofeedback:
Biofeedback is a good way to reduce stress, which will help migraine headache relief in the long run, as well as the pain of a current one. All you do is incorporate relaxing things like breathing exercises, meditation, and guided imagery, which are all types of relaxation therapies.

Migraine headaches affect so many people these days that it’s amazing. It’s actually believed that the headaches today may be worse than financial problems. And to make it all the more irritating for people, there are times when it seems as though the only way for you to relieve your migraine headaches is to take medicine, either over the counter or prescription.

If you are the type of person who doesn’t like using any medicine for your migraine headaches, then you might be interested in looking to reflexology for migraine headaches, a solution that many others have used.

Reflexology for migraine headaches is based upon the belief that certain reflexes are in your foot that correspond with different parts of your body. This, in point of fact, means that you can go to reflexology for all of your aches and pains.

The technique that reflexology uses for your feet isn’t really a massage, so though it is considered a type of therapy, you can’t call it massage therapy. Instead reflexology uses pressure points on the feet, kind of like how acupuncture uses special points on the body, except without the little needles. To use these pressure points to their advantage, the therapists use localized pressure in certain areas of the foot. They slowly work their way around the foot putting certain amounts of pressure in certain areas to relieve things like sinus pressure, back aches, and migraine headaches. What we are looking at here are the migraine headaches.

Do you not wonder at how a couple of points on the feet might help your head? Think of it this way, there is a point on your big toe that relates to the neck, and the reflexologist applies some pressure. To your dismay, it hurts a little; you did come here to feel better not increase pain. Your reflexologist backs off a little, and slowly applies and increases pressure to this point until it feels better, the tenderness there is now gone, and to your surprise, your neck is fully relaxed. As you can see reflexology for migraine headaches is really a great idea.

In a world full of migraines, any person has the ability to find some sort of medication that will help. You can either go to your doctor and have them prescribe you something, or you can buy something over the counter that will help you relieve your pain.

There are several types of migraine medications. Three of the most common are midrin, maxalt also called ritzatriptan, and topamax, also called topiramate.

Midrin:
Midrin is a medicine that combines several different headache relief techniques. It has Acetaminophen to act as a pain reliever to help relieve the pain that can be found in both tension and migraine headaches. It also has isomethepten to help narrow our body’s widened blood vessels located in the head, and finally it has a relaxant for your body, this is called Dichloralphenazone. All three of these things work together to help your body fight off a migraine headache, but tend to work better during a migraine headache than as a preventative

Maxalt or rizatriptan:
Another name for maxalt is rizatriptan. Though this can be used during a migraine headache attack, it does not usually work well as a preventative. This kind of medicine not only helps to relieve the migraine, but also a lot of the symptoms that come with it. This includes photophobia, light sensitivity, and phonophobia, sound sensitivity, as well as the nausea and vomiting that are all to common with migraine headaches.

Topamax also called topiramate:
Topamax is also commonly topiramate. Though this medicine is pretty much useless once your migraine headache attacks, it is rather useful in preventing them. This is often a geed way of reducing the number of migraine headaches that a person gets. It is a good idea to talk to your doctor about this if you get constant migraine headaches and can find no relief.

These are only three types of the common medicines that people will often take to either prevent or treat an occurring migraine headache. There are many, many other types of medicines, therapies and other migraine headache reliefs. You should always talk to a doctor to help you find what would work best for you, especially since some migraine medications may affect the heart by constricting blood vessels.

OK, so it is just a headache right? I mean, how many systems can a headache have, is it not called a headache specifically because it is a pain in the head? Well, unfortunately for some, most migraine headaches are usually accompanied by a series of other symptoms, which just make having one of these particular types of headaches all the worse.

Now you know that there are a number of migraine headache symptoms, the next question is what are they all about and what they are.

The most common:
There are symptoms associated with migraine headaches that are more common than the others. For most types of migraine headaches, nausea and vomiting are the most common. You also tend to feel an intense throbbing pain in either a part of your head or your whole head.

For migraine headaches such as aura headaches, it is common to suffer from vision problems such as seeing lights or spots, around object or people or just in general, temporary blurred vision and sometimes temporary blind vision either in one spot or an entire eye, and the vision simply goes black, and then comes back later.

Other things:
Migraine headaches cause a number of other symptoms. Before hand, you can suffer from sudden mood swings, or something like a subtle smell or taste that shouldn’t be there. You can also suffer from fatigue and muscle weakness at times. Some of these migraine headache symptoms will continue on through the migraine, and may even get worse.

When the migraine headache starts you may still have some more symptoms that have yet to show. It is easily possible that you will start having problems with light. The term for it is photophobia, and it means that you will suffer a painful oversensitivity to light. To help over come this, you will want to just lock yourself in a pitch black room and just try to relax. You may also suffer from phonophobia, which means that you will be overly sensitive to sound. So that dark room you lock yourself in should also be a quiet room. It will be much easier to deal with migraine headache symptoms if you can minimize or eliminate the effects of the symptoms.

Any body who has had a small stress induced headache knows that sucks, but imagine the migraine headaches that actually pulse and mess up your speech, eyesight, give you tingly feelings in your arms and legs. What’s worse than that is the pain can be so severe that you become nauseous and even begin to vomit.

What you might not know about your headaches is that you might actually be causing them by eating something your body can’t handle but there are many causes for migraine headaches, and the best way to avoid them is to know what might be causing it for you, and avoiding that.

Your diet:
Your diet plays a huge role in your body’s health, and something as little as skipping a meal one day could cause you to develop a migraine headache. It can also be as simple as eating something that doesn’t agree with you. It could be that you are eating too much in the way of things like cheese, grilled fish, and red wine. It can also be that you are used to having something like caffeine or alcohol, and you have suddenly stopped.

Sleeping habits:
Your sleeping habits also play a huge effect on your health and how your body reacts to certain things. Having too little sleep causes you to react to certain things such as stress differently. You are more likely to overreact, and having too much stress can easily cause you to have a migraine headache. The same applies if you get too much of sleep, except for different reasons. Too much sleep puts your body off balance compared to what you would normally have. If you get too much sleep you don’t usually get the same amount of food, and as you know skipping a meal can cause a migraine headache, and you get less exercise, which is also a key in headache prevention.

As you can see, two very basic things can cause you to have a migraine headache. Add on other factors like smoking, stress, and certain types of foods, excitement, posture, other environmental factors, and other personal triggers. There is a good chance that it is more than one of these factors that will be the culprit of setting off your headaches, and if you are constantly suffering from migraine headaches you should go to the doctor to make sure that it isn’t something more serious, and see if there is a treatment that they believe will help you.

When you hear the term migraine headache, more often than not you think of really bad throbbing headaches. What you may not instantly think of are the visual problems caused by changes in blood flow to the brain. These visual problems are part of migraine headaches and can occur whether you head hurts or not.

They are called ocular migraine headaches and can cause you to temporarily lose your vision. This can occur either in a single spot or in your entire eye. Ocular migraine headaches can also have other visual effects. It can be that you see spots of colorful light, like you would if you stared into a bright light for a couple of seconds and then quickly looked away this includes the spots and the zigzags of light that you would see. And in some cases you can actually see what appears to be an aura around people and objects.

The causes of an ocular migraine headache are still hazy. It is believed that the blood flow to your brain, more specifically around the area where the visual cortex or occipital lobe are located. Because this is the area with the blood flow problems, it is possible for you to suffer from an ocular migraine headache without any headaches or other symptoms.

You may suffer from nothing else during an ocular migraine headache, but it can be dangerous given certain situations. If you are driving you need to pull over. Even if you know the roads perfectly, it is dangerous to drive with any kind of vision impairment. The same goes with anything else that can end in injury.

To help your ocular headache pass, you should stop and relax for a few minutes. If your vision problems do not go away in this time, you need to stay put until they do. It can take up to half an hour if you are suffering from a bad one.

Though. For the most part having an ocular migraine headache can be painless; there may be other reasons for your seemingly random vision issues. For this reason you should go see an eye doctor if you either get these headaches a lot or you have lingering effects that last over a half hour. You may find that you are suffering from a retinal detachment, which needs treatment.
